Early Gustav Stickley 2 Door Bookcase with Keyed Tenons
Original Gustav Stickley early 2 door bookcase featuring four keyed through tenons on each side, signed with the early Eastwood, N.Y. paper label used from 1905 to 1907. Excellent quarter-sawn ray flake in the doors. While most of the furniture produced by Gustav Stickley's Craftsman Workshops was built using the more expensive and more stable quarter-sawn white oak, by far, most of the bookcases were made with plain sawn oak on the doors. Gustav Stickley bookcases with keyed tenons are even less common, though they usually were constructed with the more desirable and visually interesting quarter-sawn oak like this example. The bookcase retains it's rich reddish brown original finish under an old overcoat. The bookcase is in very sound condition. The back is made with frame and panel construction and shows moisture damage on the back side, bottom half and slight rippling to the inside around the lower shelf area which shows only upon close inspection with the doors open, as shown in the images of that area.
